Duane Edward Truman, 71, of Cassville, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at his home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1940, in Diagonal, Iowa, the son of Ed and Ora (Wilmeth) Truman. On Dec. 27, 1974, in Cassville, he was united in marriage to Janice "Jan" Jackson, who survives.

Additional survivors include: one son, Lane Truman and his wife, Misty, of Cassville; one daughter, Barbie Truman, of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Evelyn Davenport and her husband, Marvin, of Mt. Vernon, and Robbie Taylor, of Carthage, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

He grew up and received his education in Creston, Iowa, graduating from Creston High School. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. In 1963, he joined the United States Army and graduated from Flight School in Class 68-21 as a helicopter pilot. He was assigned to the 502nd Aviation Company, then B Company, 1/9 Cav in Vietnam where he served for a year.

Throughout his Army career he received various medals, ribbons and badges, including a Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with a Silver and a Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Army Aviator Badge, Distinguished Flying Cross, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. On Jan. 31, 1983, he retired as a major. He was a member of the South Missouri Chapter of the VHPA, the Monett VFW and Military Officers Association.

Funeral services were held Saturday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Rev. Pat Elsey and Ralph Hilburn conducted the services. Burial with military honors was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cassville.
