4 August 2011
Dear Member,

The first of August  means that the third quarterly meeting of the South Missouri Chapter of VHPA is just a few days away.  Scheduled to begin at 10:00am on Saturday, August 13th, the meeting will convene at the HyVee Club Room, 405 East Nifong, in Columbia, Missouri.  Following a few announcements, a brief business meeting, and election of officers, lunch will be served -- provided by the Chapter.

Our Chapter continues to grow.  We've already had a new member join this month and some who have already RSVP'd will be attending for the first time.  Please, mark your calendar and come enjoy the fellowship of those who share similar experiences.  RSVP by return email, or call me at (417) 759-7487.  This is necessary to insure we have enough food for everyone.  RSVP's must be received by Wednesday, August 10th, so an accurate head-count can be given.

At the close of our meeting there will be a brief Change of Command, and Russ Emory will become our President.  Your presence will show support as he leads us for the next two years.

As we look to the future, let me close by saying it has been my sincere pleasure to have served as your President for the last two years.  We have seen our Chapter grow to a membership exceeding 80 members, while honoring veterans of all conflicts.  I am encouraged as we look to the future.  Remember, this is YOUR Chapter.  Support it as much as you can.  Keep in mind that they aren't making any more of us!  Come, be active, and enjoy the camaraderie.  You'll be glad you did.

See you in Columbia,

John Sorensen,
President

12 July 2011

Dear Member,

The Chapter's third quarterly meeting of 2011 is only a month away.
I continue to be amazed by how fast time flies!  The meeting will be
held on Saturday, 13 August at the HyVee Club Room, 405 East Nifong, Columbia, Missouri, and will be called to order at 10:00 am.
Following our business session, lunch will be provided by the Chapter.

This will be a very important meeting, as we will be electing officers
to serve for the next two (2) years.  Russ Emory will take over as
President, and a new Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer will be
elected.  Just a reminder:  If you have a desire to seek one of these
offices, you must make it known, in writing, by 15 July.  Please send
your written notification to me today, so it will be received by the
established deadline.  Mail it to: VHPASMO, 8772 East Farm Road 2, Fair Grove, Missouri, 65648.

It has truly been my honor, and my pleasure, to have been your
President for the last two (2) years.  By being a member of the South
Missouri Chapter of VHPA, each one of you have added greatly to the success of our Chapter.  We can all stand together, and be proud of our service and of the brotherhood we have formed.

In closing, please make every effort to attend this meeting.  RSVP by
return email, or call me at (417) 759-7487.  Let's all fall in, and
stand united behind Russ as he leads us through the next two (2)
years.

See you in Columbia.

Warmest regards,

John Sorensen, President
South Missouri Chapter of VHPA

Once again, our quarterly meeting was very well attended.  We were joined by wives and family, first time attendees, potential new members, and a new member.  The facilities at Union Station, the food, and the service were top notch.

Our guest, Mr. Bill Rieger, led an informative discussion of recent changes in our veteran’s benefits and then answered the questions asked by our members.  He is a Veterans Service Officer, with the D. A. V., and works at the V. A. Medical Center in Kansas City.  He has offered to assist our members any way he can.

The third quarterly meeting is scheduled for 13 August 2011 and will begin at 10:00am.  It will be held at the HyVee Club Room, 409 E. Nifong,  Columbia, Missouri.  At this meeting, we will be electing new officers for the next two (2) years.  A Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer will be elected.  If you have a desire to seek an office, you must notify the Chapter Council, in writing, by 15 July 2011.  To be eligible to seek, and hold an office within the Chapter, you must be a Chapter member, be dues current, and be in good standing with the national VHPA.  To be eligible to vote, you must be in attendance when the votes are cast, be a member of the South Missouri Chapter of VHPA, and be dues current with the Chapter.  Lunch at the meeting will be provided by the Chapter, so make your plans to attend, come join us as the Chapter looks to the future, and enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie that is experienced and shared wherever, and whenever we get together.

As President, let me express my gratitude to those of you who respond to my requests for R. S. V. P.’s.  The percentage of respondents is high, but not 100%.  A situation developed with our Kansas City meeting about which I think every member should be aware.  We ask for R. S. V. P.’s, not only to insure the room will be large enough for our expected attendees, but to insure we have enough food for those attending.  When members make reservations, and then do not attend, the Chapter has to pay for meals that are never served and, thus, go uneaten.  I realize that occasionally circumstances change from the time the R. S. V. P. is made until the day of the meeting.  These changes could be health related, weather related, family needs, etc.  However, if a R. S. V. P. needs to be amended, or cancelled, please let me know.  We may not be able to make any last minute changes, but at least we can try.

In closing, as my term as President comes to an end, it is hard for me to believe that nearly two (2) years have passed since Russ Emory, Bill Thompson and I first got together.  Since then our membership, General, Associate, and Honorary members now exceed eighty (80) in number.  I am grateful for your support and encouragement, excited by your enthusiasm as our Chapter continues to grow and looks to the future, and I am extremely and forever blessed by your friendship.  May God Bless You All.

See you in Columbia,

John Sorensen, President

Dear Member,

The second quarterly meeting of the South Missouri Chapter of VHPA is
just five (5) weeks away.  I hope you will mark your calendars and
make plans to attend.  The meeting will be held on Saturday, May 21st,
at Pierpont's at Union Station, 30 West Pershing, Kansas City,
Missouri 64108.  It will begin at 11:30 and, after a brief business
meeting lunch will be served.

I am also hoping to bring a guest -- a Veterans Service Officer, from
the D. A. V., who will outline changes in veterans' benefits and be on
hand to answer your questions.  I should know in a few days if we are
successful in this effort.

Our meeting in St. Louis was our best attended meeting so far.  Our
Chapter continues to grow and 70% of our members, whose memberships
were about to expire, have renewed those memberships.  I, along with
the Chapter Council, am grateful for this fact.  It shows that our
membership is pleased with our Chapter, the leadership,, our direction
and plans for the future.  As President, I am thankful for the
confidence and support of each one of you.

I mentioned lunch earlier.  Lunch will include salad, your choice of
entrees:  Kansas City Strip Steak, Grilled Chicken Dijon, or Sauteed
Atlantic Salmon, bread, and desert.  Coffee and iced tea are also
included.  The price of each plate is $30, which includes the meal,
the room costs, all taxes and gratuities.  Once again, wives and other
guests are welcome to join us in the fun and fellowship we always
share when we get together.

In a couple weeks, or so, I will be emailing you again, asking for
your R. S. V. P., so we can get an accurate head count for our
lunches.  Mark your calendars, plan on being there to enjoy a great
lunch and the camaraderie of being with friends and fellow pilots.

See you in Kansas City!

John Sorensen,
President

I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I want to wish
you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, and
prosperous New Year.  As 2011 approaches, the South Missouri Chapter
of VHPA looks forward to continued growth, celebration of all
veterans, new venues for our quarterly meetings, and the fun and
fellowship we all share when we're together.

Speaking of our quarterly meetings, our first meeting of the year is
scheduled for February 19th.  The meeting will be held at the world
head quarters of Wings of Hope, 18370 Wings of Hope Boulevard,
St.Louis, Missouri, 63005.  This site is on the grounds of the
Spirit of St. Louis Airport.  The meeting will begin at 11:00 am, and
following a brief business meeting and a short presentation by Wings
of Hope, lunch will be served.  The cost of lunch will be $15 per
person.

As president, I am honored to be just a small part of such a
tremendous group of men.  I would, however, be remiss if I didn't
remind some of you that your membership will soon be expiring.  It is
the hope of all members that you renew your membership and be part of
us in the months and years ahead.

John Sorensen,

President

VHPASMO Book Project

The VHPASMO Book Project began in August, 2010. In our mission to assist all Vets in Veteran Hospitals and Homes in Missouri, the VHPASMO has began a project to provide books for those in residence at these locations. Books are donated by members of the chapter and are labeled with a sticker on the inside cover that contains a short bio of the member's participation in US Army Aviation and his combat duties in Vietnam. Books will be collected at the quarterly business meetings, then labeled and distributed by the Chapter Council. Members, please look through your library of books and see what you can donate to a vet who is in residence in a hospital or home in Missouri. We'll make the sticker and put it in the book. You will be memorialized in each book you donate and your book will make life a little more interesting for a brother in need.

Thank you,

John Sorensen,

President

4th Quarter Meeting Info

Plans are already coming together for our fourth quarterly meeting, and, as plans are finalized, updates will be posted on the website.  Here's what we know so far:

  • The meeting will be held at The Keeter Center at the College of the Ozarks, One (1) Opportunity Avenue, Point Lookout Missouri 65726.  This very impressive facility and setting is two (2) miles south of Branson, conveniently located just off U.S. 65.  The Keeter Center currently has a very nice display area, honoring those who served in World War II, and this display will still be in place during our meeting.  A DVD will be playing, showing some of the students as they traveled to Normandy, accompanying some of the veterans who fought there.  The College of the Ozarks also offers other museums, on campus, which offer either free or discounted admissions to veterans.
  • The meeting will begin at 12:00, noon.  After a very brief business meeting, lunch will be served.  Lunch will be braised beef roast slow cooked, with rich brown sauce, roasted root vegetables, creamy mashed potatoes, gravy, fresh house made bakery rolls and butter, iced tea, coffee, and water.  Dessert will follow the meal.
  • The cost per attendee will be $20.00.  This will cover the cost of the room, the meal, all taxes and gratuities.  When all is said and done, and everything taken into consideration, this is a real bargain.

Branson will have a lot of opportunities for entertainment, museums, and displays during its Veterans' Week celebration, November 5 - 11, 2010, culminating in a Veterans' Day parade.  The Chapter Council continues to look for lodgings and entertaining shows which offer discounts to veterans, showing appreciation for our service.  Continue checking this website, as future details unfold.  Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend.
